The Return Of ‘The Real McCoy’ To BBC!
The black sketch comedy show, ‘The Real McCoy’ has come back
to BBC iPlayer, after many
years of campaigns demanding it's return. Originally broadcasted from
1991-1996, it featured multiple black comedians including Leo Muhammad and
Felix Dexter. It holds historical importance as it was one of the foremost
shows to feature predominantly black and Asian artists.
Numerous campaigns were initiated during the past many
years, calling for the return of the show, but had fallen on deaf ears. The BBC
has now added all episodes of the show to the iPlayer and you can watch them here.
The seminal sketch show not only broke down barriers and
gave a crucial mainstream platform to diverse comedy, at a time when it needed
the most but laid the foundation for inclusiveness and representation. Even
though the return of this famed show was long overdue, it's comeback in 2020 –
a year sparked by global racial awareness – one that is unprecedented, is
particularly notable. It definitely serves as a potent reminder of the
pertinence of black creativity over the years.
The show’s return also serves as a fitting tribute to two
veteran stars – Collette Johnson and Felix Dexter who died in 2013.
